The journey to Flyway

Redgate has been helping database professionals with their SQL Server development and deployments for over 25 years.  It all started with SQL Compare and its state-based approach of comparing two databases and deploying the differences.

SQL Source Control launched in 2010 bringing a more integrated experience with popular version control systems at the time.

As more users moved to automated pipelines and Continuous Delivery, we learned a state-based approach doesn't always work, which is why we released a migrations-based approach, SQL Change Automation (previously known as ReadyRoll).

In 2010, we started developing our Oracle solution with Schema Compare for Oracle, Data Compare for Oracle, and Source Control for Oracle.  In 2018, we knew we knew we needed a migrations-based approach for Oracle as well and needed to support additional popular database systems like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Snowflake.

In 2019, we acquired Flyway, which supported a migrations approach for many different databases.

In 2020, we expanded Flyway to include object level versioning and added Flyway Desktop as a graphical interface for developers working on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.  Flyway is the next version of our existing, single database versioning and automation tools (SQL Source Control, SQL Change Automation, and Source Control for Oracle) and provides one standardized versioning and automation solution for all your Database DevOps needs.
