When making HTTPS requests to the application, my browser says the connection is not secure and/or and the response body just says 'default backend - 404'.

This may be a problem with the URL you're making the request to. Make sure you're using the same base URL as you provided in the 'Instance DNS' field of the Communications security configuration page.
