"Task could not be loaded" error when using TFS Build plugin

The following error text appears when using the TFS Build plugin:
Error message
error MSB4062: ... task could not be loaded from the assembly ...
Cause
The TFS Build Plugin can't find the TFS files it needs to run. This is usually because you've upgraded to TFS 2015 and have previously used version 2.0.2.439 or earlier of the TFS Build plugin. These versions aren't compatible with TFS 2015.
Fix
Even if you've updated to the latest version of TFS Build plugin, the error will keep appearing until you update project files using the new plugin.
