License Types
Published 07 November 2024
This page outlines the different types of consumption models used across Redgate products. The main types are user-based, server-based and capacity-based.
User-based
Most Redgate products use user-based licensing. If you have been assigned a license for one of our user-based products, you can simply sign into the product with your Redgate account, and it will be activated under the edition and for the duration that your license is valid. You are also entitled to use that license on as many devices as you need. For example, if you plan to use our products at work, on a laptop at home, and on a VM, you can install and activate it on all three by logging in with your Redgate ID.
Your license should only be used by you. If more than one individual needs to use the license, additional licenses will need to be purchased and assigned to each user.
A user can be allocated to a user-based license through our Customer Portal, and we provide full instructions in our portal guide video.
Server-based
Redgate Monitor and SQL Backup use server-based licensing. Redgate Monitor server-based licenses are consumed by installing the software on a server and signing in with a license administrator account, at which point the license will be tied to the server. SQL Backup server-based licenses are consumed by installing the software on a server and entering the serial key for that license.
Unlike user-based licenses, where a single user consumes a single entitlement, a Redgate Monitor installation can consume multiple entitlements depending on the number of monitored instances. SQL Backup servers consume one entitlement per backed up server.
A user can be made a license administrator or a serial number can be retrieved through our Customer Portal, and we provide full instructions in our portal guide video.
You can find more information on how Redgate Monitor licenses are allocated in this article.
Capacity-based
Licensing for Test Data Manager, Data Masker for Oracle, Data Masker for SQL Server, SQL Clone, and SQL Provision use capacity-based licensing. Capacity-based licenses are consumed by the number of users that are allocated to the license and installing the software on a device.
Capacity-based licenses consume entitlements based on the total volume of data in all production databases that you would like to provision or mask from. This includes artefacts such as log files and FILESTREAM data. If you are provisioning or masking from a different source e.g. a data warehouse or a backup, you will only need to calculate the databases size in their production environment.
You can find more information on how these licenses are consumed in this article.
Bundle license groupings
Some of our product bundles will be grouped so that different consumption types or tools can be used independently from each other. For example, SQL Toolbelt will be separated into Desktop tools and Backup and Monitoring licenses. Customers can allocate users to our Desktop tools and individual servers to our Backup and Monitoring licenses through our Customer Portal.
