AI in SQL Prompt
Published 22 August 2025
SQL Prompt’s AI-powered features help you to write, review, and optimize T-SQL faster by combining its understanding of your database schema and SQL expertise, with the power of generative AI and machine learning. Write and modify T-SQL accurately using natural language, get clear explanations of unfamiliar code, and uncover performance-boosting index suggestions in seconds — all without leaving SSMS or Visual Studio. The AI-powered features are opt-in to give you control over how and when you adopt AI into your workflow.
SQL Prompt AI comes with many useful features, including the generation of T-SQL using context information from the provided schema, and is powerful enough to utilize more complex T-SQL, such as joins, indexing, and subqueries, enabling it to empower anyone's SQL skills, from a beginner to a high end user.
It comes in 3 main flavors (see AI to empower your SQL and database development for full details):
- Prompt AI - An inline AI helper that can be triggered directly from your active query editor window against the whole script or the current selection. In addition to explaining your SQL and answering freeform requests, you can also fix SQL query with AI and optimize SQL query with AI.
- Redgate Assistant (Preview) - An embedded AI chat, specialized in T-SQL where you chat about anything related with your queries or databases and have everything explained in plain language. Redgate Assistant pulls in all the context it needs on demand to get you quickly to the exact answer you need. Your conversation stays there to revisit later, so you can pick up wherever you left off (including from a different machine such as a VM).
- Query Index Analysis - Get clear, actionable advice on what indexes you need to improve query performance. Query Index Analysis evaluates the potential impact of different indexes and delivers smart recommendations for improvement.
These features are available for anyone who has an active subscription license of SQL Prompt, either standalone or through a bundle. These features are not available to users with a perpetual license.
If you need any help or have any questions, explore our AI in SQL Prompt FAQ or EULA (as well as Redgate products subscription based terms, section 8.3).
